Safer Beauty - Three Reasons to love Beauycounter

Have you heard of Beautycounter? Up until a few months ago, I really hadn’t. I knew they had a “pop-up shop” in Target for a few weeks, but that was it. Once I dug a little deeper, it didn’t take long before I knew this was a company I wanted to be a part of. Beautycounter just celebrated its fourth birthday on March 4th, and I thought it might be a good time to pass on a little bit of why I fell in love with this company, so here are my top three reasons.

I feel good about what I'm using.

Beautycounter’s mission is “To get safer products into the hands of everyone.” The company was formed by a concerned wife and mother who was worried about the quality of the products she was using, not only on herself but for her family. As it turns out, in the U.S., there isn't much regulation when it comes to which chemicals companies can use in their products, and it’s shockingly easy for “iffy” ingredients to get into the hands of even the most conscious consumers.

What I truly respect, and find unique, about Beautycounter is, not only their commitment to safer beauty products, but also to education. They don’t want you to “take their word for it.” They want to teach you about the ingredients in the products so that you can feel good about using them. Not all natural ingredients are safe, and not all synthetic ingredients are unsafe, so it’s important to take the time and learn a little about what’s in the bottle. There are several resources on the Beautycounter site for continuing education. "The Never List" is a compilation of over 1,500 questionable chemicals you should always avoid, and The Asterisk Blog offers great explanations about the market as well as what’s safe vs. unsafe. (Check out the “Greenwashing” post that just came out… that explains a LOT.)

Over 80% of all Beautycounter’s ingredients are either natural or plant-derived, and they work diligently to manufacture in the United States whenever possible. However, one of my favorite qualities is that they do NOT, under any circumstances, test products or ingredients on animals. This resonates with my ever-animal-loving heart, and it’s just one more reason I feel so good about supporting this company.

Quality is King.

As much as using safe products is great, it probably won’t “amount to a hill of beans” if they’re not effective. As much as I wanted to use Beautycounter, I didn’t want to use sub-par products. The very first thing I tried out was the “Lip Shine.” I had been a fanatic about Dior's Lip Addict for years, so I was pretty skeptical about switching over but still excited to give it a shot. I was sold the moment I put it on. It went on so smoothly, gave my lips a little luster and shine, and never (ever) became sticky. Since then, I have yet to find an item I didn’t mind switching over to.

I have found these products do what they are advertised to do, and the company isn’t hiding their results. If you go to any number of items (like the toner pads, another staple of mine), you’ll see their rate of effectiveness is right there under the description whenever it’s available. There's total transparency with this company, and, as a professional with a background in Quality Management, I’m impressed.

There's something for everyone.

Personally, I love a “one-stop shop.” If there’s a single place I can go for skin care, makeup, sunscreen (for the family), hair care, bath & body, AND my kids - Done. We are all busy people, and I find it so helpful that Beautycounter offers personal products for everyone in my house, well almost everyone… we still have to outsource for the pups. I believe in the safety and quality of the company so if they can fill a need - like a kid’s detangling conditioner - that’s a win/win for me.

I recently discovered a statement from the American Cancer Society that said 95% of cancer is environmental. That’s scary. It’s a little depressing to think about, but, if only 5% of cancer is genetic, I absolutely want to do my part to make sure I’m limiting my environmental exposure by using safe products in our home. The more I research Beautycounter, the more comfortable I get with their products, and the more I want to introduce this company to everyone and help spread their mission.

It’s hard to pick just a few favorites to leave you with, but if you're interested in learning more, some universally loved items are the: Charcoal Cleansing Bar, Lip Conditioner Set, Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer (an "Allure" Best of Beauty Winner), Lip Gloss (go bold and try the Ruby) Body Butter in Citrus Mimosa. These products get great reviews and have earned the "L&L" seal of approval.
